Most modern brake systems consist of a hydraulic system that pushes highly pressurised brake fliud from the booster down thin hydraulic pressured lines to a brake caliper. The brake pads are then pressed against a metal disc or drum to slow the vehicle.
Usually the front brakes will be more powerful than the rear to correctly distribute the stopping power between all four wheels under full frontal load.
